I am leaving Kuala Lumpur today having attended the last two days of the girls’ World Junior Tennis Asia Oceania final qualifying. The Malaysian Tennis Association team did a great job with the organisation and the event ran very smoothly. The Philippines team, pictured above, were the surprise package at the event, beating Japan in the final.

The referee was  my old friend Chen Shu whom I first met in 1997 when I made my first visit to China. I conducted a course for coaches in Shenyang and Shu was my translator. Since then he has become one of the top people in officiating, was the tennis manager for the Beijing Olympics and for the past decade has worked with the WTA.

Heading to Bangkok now for the Junior Fed Cup final qualifying which starts tomorrow.
